Westlife were formed in 1998 with the members Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, Mark Feehily, Kian Egan and Bryan Mcfadden.
Shane, Kian and Mark started out as IOU which originally had six members.
In 1998 the lads opened up the show for the Backstreet Boys in Dublin. When Louis broke the news, Shane cried. Later the same year, they won best new tour act at the Smash Hits Poll Winners party.
The bands first seven singles went straight in at the top spot. Bob The Builder halted the run when it stopped their single What Makes A Man from hitting the top spot.
The double-A-side single I Have A Dream/Seasons In The Sun was the first number one of the new millenium.
The lads have duetted with many stars including Mariah Carey, Delta Goodrem, Lulu, Donny Osmond, Donna Summer and Diana Ross. They also performed The Dance with Ronan Keating at the Meteor awards.
In 2003, the lads headed to Nashville to record a documentary named Can They Cut It. The lads were a success and performed Daytime Friends.
On 09 March 2004, Bryan McFadden announced he was quitting the band shortly before they were due to embark on the Turnaround tour.
The band carried on and the tour was a major success and proved they were here to stay.
In 2006, the lads signed a five album deal with SonyBMG.
Westlife have won countless of awards including two Brit awards. Westlife have also won the Meteor Awards for eight consecutive years.
Westlife have achieved an amazing fourteen number one singles in the UK and have sold an outstanding 40 million records worldwide. The lads also hold the Best Selling Arena act for the only artist to have played Wembley Arena a record breaking 29 times.
On 1 June 2008, Westlife achieved their ultimate dream to play Croke Park in Dublin. The gig was sold-out to 82,000 fans and was released on DVD later the same year.
In June 2008 saw Westlife release their autobiography entitled Westlife: Our Story.
In July 2008, Westlife took a year-out to spend time with their families and enjoy some quality free time.
On 25 October 2009, Westlife released their first single from their new album called Where We Are. The single What About Now charted at number two.
In May 2011, Westlife announced after 13 years they were leaving Sony and signing with RCA. A new single is planned to be released in August, followed by a Greatest Hits album and tour in 2012.
On 19th October 2011, Westlife broke the hearts of million of fans by announcing they were to go our separate ways after a greatest hits album and a farewell tour in 2012. The official site announced "The decision is entirely amicable and after spending all of our adult life together so far, we want to have a well-earned break and look at new ventures. We see the greatest hits collection and the farewell tour as the perfect way to celebrate our incredible career along with our fans. We are really looking forward to getting out on the tour and seeing our fans one last time".
On 22 and 23 June 2012 saw the lads perform two consecutive nights at Croke Park in Dublin. Their final performance saw the lads play to 85,000 fans in an emotionally charged night.
