December 2010: Sligo Plumbing & Heating 3 McHugh’s Bar 0
HISTORY was made last Thursday night as Sligo Plumbing & Heating claimed the first ever piece of silverware on offer in the Sligo Rovers 11-a-side Astro League when they defeated McHugh’s Bar 3-0 in the final of the Socrates Healthcare Informatics Cup.
Sligo Plumbing & Heating, semi-final victors over PSO the previous Monday, deserved their win with their dominance reflected by goals from Michael Walsh, Paul Keaveney and Shane Filan.
The winners almost scored in the 15th minute.
Michael Walsh slid the ball into Mark Breheny’s path and the Sligo Senior Gaelic footballer was denied by a great stop from the McHugh’s Bar goalkeeper, Barry McGauley.
Five minutes later they went even closer when Shane Filan found space on the right side of the penalty area but his fizzing shot hit the outside of the post.
However, this pressure was rewarded in the 25th minute. The ball was played into the feet of Shane Filan, whose shot was parried by Barry McGauley but only into the path of Michael Walsh who scored with a simple tap-in.
Ahead 1-0 at the break, the winners doubled their advantage a minute into the second-half.
Philip Gallagher played the ball in from the right wing and a McHugh’s Bar defender, Will Lattimore, failed to clear. The ball then came through to Paul Keaveney, whose tidy finish at the back post put the Brian Heraghty-captained side two goals up.
McHugh’s Bar player Dermot O’Connor went close to halving the deficit but, after he burst through the Sligo Plumbing & Heating defence, he sent his shot wide of target.
With six minutes left Sligo Plumbing & Heating confirmed the result with a third goal. Brian Heraghty’s clipped cross to the back post found striker Shane Filan, who scored with a header.
Ionut Carabus nearly netted a consolation goal for McHugh’s Bar in the dying minutes but his shot from distance flashed inches wide.
